5 Things Morning People Do

By Makenna Sturgeon on August 16, 2017

“I’m a morning person” is almost like saying “I’m a unicorn” when you’re speaking in a college setting. I’ve met very few people in my life that truly enjoy waking up in morning, and even fewer that are actually productive in the mornings.

Though mornings seem rough, they truly are one of the best times of day to get things done. If you want to be a morning person, but have a hard time becoming one, here are five things that might help you.

1. Have coffee ready

Most coffee makers now have an auto timer that you can set. This means that the night before you can have coffee ready for you when you wake up and give less effort to the act of making it. If you don’t have an auto timer, at least have the coffee in the filter and water in so you can just hit brew. If you’re not a coffee drinker, congrats, now you get to skip step one!

2. Don’t hit snooze!

I know this may sound a little bit repetitive, but seriously, hitting snooze can be the difference between waking up at six and making it to the gym, and being up at nine and rushing to your class. The first few mornings will be rough, but when you get used to waking up at the same time every morning, hitting snooze won’t even cross your mind anymore.

Waking up to the first alarm may feel hard at the moment, but by the end of the day when you’re looking back, you’ll realize how nice it was to have the morning for yourself and your extra little “self-care” chores.

3. Eat breakfast

When people say, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” they aren’t kidding. Breakfast offers your brain energy to wake up and think with. It also puts you in a better mood, and if you’re able to make a tasty breakfast, offers a reason for you to wake up and eat it!

Breakfast is an important habit because it makes your day more productive, and makes your body feel fresher if it’s nutritious. Here’s a cool way to make breakfast cookies if you’re not for cooking in the morning.

I’m also a huge fan of instant oatmeal or a bowl of Cheerios on those extra busy mornings. Breakfast with some coffee and water is life changing when becoming a morning person!

4. Set your intentions

One of the best things about mornings is that they are YOURS. So, this means that you’ve given yourself extra time to set your daily goals and prioritize your day. Prioritizing makes the day go smoothly, and gives you a moment to move things around and make sure that you also get some personal things done.

Intentions are important for the day because they give you something to work toward and work with. If you tell yourself that your goal for the day is to be kind, you set that intention for the day and it becomes easier to commit to. Doing this is like having a New Year’s Resolution every day of the year! AND, they’re easy to keep.

5. Move

The moving part doesn’t need to be huge. However, stretching when you get out of bed, or going on a quick walk in the crisp morning air makes every morning easier because you get your blood pumping.

Personally, I love walking before the sun is fully up and watching the light change during my walk. This symbolizes a new day for me and reminds me that I have a fresh start right at this very moment; it is a personal and important time of my day. Even if you can’t bring yourself to go outside, a small stretch works just the same.

Put these five things into your morning routine, and watch yourself begin to love your mornings!
